I’m arguing with myself over food. Not my own food (though I do do that) but the food my characters are eating. One of the many, many items that go into world development is agriculture, and right now my character needs a different kind of food to eat. Food is an important part of any character’s life. One most characters can’t life without. So developing realistic possibilities for food is something I strive for.
But I’m no botanist, master gardener, or even an herbologist. This would be a great deal easier if I was. I do know certain plants are sun lovers and others are not though. For instance, if my character is wandering through a forest constantly cloaked in fog, it is unlikely they will find an orange tree thriving there. Imports are always a possibility depending on how the world is set up, the character’s access to them, money required, etc.. Magic is also an option as well - causing plants to thrive in areas they would not typically be found. But that’s not how this world is set up. It’s not historical fiction, so I don’t have to worry about foods I associate today with certain countries, not even being heard of yet in those places. But I do have a very non-magical set up to the world, and I’m in a rut. It’s not just that the character is eating things that are a staple of the diet. Just like in real life and thinking of dinner ideas, I’m in a bit of a rut when thinking of character meals. So I’ll go do some Googling to help point me in a new direction. Maybe I’ll even figure out a tasty treat for them to have. And one for me too. 😊
